Stress and anxiety are among the most common reasons people come to see me, and among the conditions I find most rewarding to treat. The two are closely related — chronic stress often evolves into anxiety, and anxiety is almost always stressful to live with — but they can also show up quite differently from person to person.

Whether you're running on empty after months of relentless pressure, living with a constant low hum of worry, struggling to switch off at the end of the day, or experiencing more acute episodes of panic or overwhelm, acupuncture offers a gentle, non-pharmaceutical way to help regulate your nervous system and restore a genuine sense of calm.

How does acupuncture help with stress and anxiety?

From a Western scientific perspective, acupuncture has been shown to reduce the activity of the sympathetic nervous system — the part responsible for our 'fight or flight' response — while stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system, which governs rest and recovery. It also influences the release of neurotransmitters including serotonin and endorphins, which play a significant role in mood regulation.

For stress specifically, research has shown that acupuncture helps regulate the HPA axis — the hormonal pathway that controls our stress response — reducing elevated cortisol levels and interrupting the cycle of physiological arousal that keeps us locked in a stressed state. This is part of why people often describe feeling a distinct shift after treatment: not just relaxed in the moment, but less reactive and more resilient over time.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), stress and anxiety are often understood as a disturbance of the Heart and the Shen — the spirit or mind — frequently arising in combination with Liver Qi stagnation, which reflects the way emotional tension manifests physically in the body. Treatment is always tailored to your individual picture, not a one-size-fits-all protocol.

What many clients notice first is how deeply relaxing they find treatment. It's not unusual to fall asleep on the table. That shift in your nervous system — from alert and braced to genuinely at ease — is often felt from the very first session.

What does the research say?

There is a growing body of evidence supporting acupuncture in the treatment of both stress and anxiety. A 2018 review published in the Journal of Acupuncture and Meridian Studies found that acupuncture was associated with significantly reduced anxiety scores compared to control groups. Research into acupuncture and stress has demonstrated measurable reductions in cortisol and other stress biomarkers alongside self-reported improvements in wellbeing. The British Acupuncture Council has collated extensive evidence summaries on acupuncture and anxiety, which you can explore at [acupuncture.org.uk](https://acupuncture.org.uk).

What to expect

Your first appointment (60–75 minutes) begins with a detailed conversation about your health, history, and what you're experiencing. This helps me build a full picture before we begin treatment. Subsequent sessions are 50 minutes.

Most people find that a course of 4–6 weekly or fortnightly sessions produces meaningful change, though you may well notice something shifting after your first or second appointment.

I offer a free 15-minute telephone consultation if you'd like to talk through whether acupuncture might be right for you before committing to an appointment.
